Recovery Beyond the Scar — Podcast Transcript
So, you’re six weeks or more after major surgery.
You’ve been discharged. You’ve been told your health diagnosis and what
things may look like from this point forward. This is what it is.
But you’re still not yourself.
You don’t feel like you used to feel. You don’t have the energy that you
used to have, and you’re starting to wonder whether this is what life is
going to be like forever.
I’ve been there.
I’ve had several major surgeries, including two open-heart surgeries,
with the most recent being five years ago.
I’m now on long-term warfarin, and I have experienced this journey from
both sides of the treatment room—as a physiotherapist and as a patient.
I understand where this recovery gap sits.
We go to rehabilitation. We do the things we’ve been told we need to do.
Then we reach a point where the professionals say:
“Yep, off you go. You’re all good to go.”
But you’re left wondering how.
How do I go back to being who I was?
How do I return to managing all the tasks that lie before me and
complete them in the way I want to?
How do I become as efficient as I can—as a mum, a wife and a
professional in my field?
Part of recovery is taking the time to understand that everything does
not need to happen at once.
It is about understanding why your battery may still feel so low and
what you can do to begin recharging it.
It is also about recognising why recovery does not simply end once the
scar has healed.
I’m going to keep you updated on the things I’m working on in the
background to help support people like us—people who have been through
major health challenges and recovery processes.
This health journey is never simple, is it?
But I’m looking forward to being able to support and guide you, and to
creating a space where we can help one another get the best out of life
and live as fully as we possibly can.
Thanks for listening.
