What’s Life Like Today? As Tomorrow and Yesterday Were Surely Different...
Let today be enough to notice.
There are days after surgery or a major diagnosis when life feels unfamiliar.
The room may be the same. Your routines may look almost the same. People may expect you to be “getting back to normal.”
But inside, something has shifted.
Your body may feel different. Your energy may come and go. Your confidence may feel quieter than it once was. Your mind may wander between what happened, what changed, and what might happen next.
It can be tempting to measure today against yesterday.
Before this, I could do more. Before this, I felt more certain. Before this, I knew who I was.
It can also be tempting to measure today against tomorrow.
When I heal, I will feel better. When I am stronger, I will begin again. When I know what comes next, I will relax.
But today deserves to be seen too.
Not judged. Not rushed. Not compared.
Just noticed.
What is life like today?
Maybe today is tender. Maybe today is steadier than last week. Maybe today you got dressed, answered a message, rested without guilt, or took a short walk. Maybe today you cried. Maybe today you laughed and surprised yourself. Maybe today you felt both grateful and frustrated in the same hour.
All of that belongs.
Healing is not only about getting back to who you were. Sometimes it is about slowly learning how to live with the person you are becoming.
That person may need more softness. More patience. More honest boundaries. More time to make decisions. More permission to change.
None of this means you are failing.
It means you are paying attention to a life that has asked something big of you.
You do not have to force confidence today. You do not have to have a clear plan today. You do not have to feel grateful every moment today.
You can simply begin with noticing.
Notice what your body is asking for. Notice what feels heavy. Notice what feels possible. Notice one small thing that still feels like you. Notice one small thing that feels new.
Today does not have to look like yesterday. And it does not have to prove you are ready for tomorrow.
Today can be its own place. A place to breathe. A place to listen. A place to rebuild gently.
One quiet moment at a time.
Reflection prompt:
What does life feel like today, if I do not compare it to who I was yesterday or who I might be tomorrow?
Thinking of you today, Becky
